Making your own side tables can be as simple as refinishing old furniture or it can be as extensive as hand-building a table from scratch. The end result will be a side table that is unique to you and your home.

This DIY side table project can be as challenging or as simple as you make it. If you’re looking for an easy side table project, you should begin by refinishing your side table’s legs.

This is a fairly easy project and we’ll walk you through the entire refinishing process step by step. So let’s get started!

What You’ll Need?

Before you begin, you’ll need to decide what type of wood you want for your table. You can choose from walnut, maple, or oak.

Once you’ve decided on the type of wood, it’s time to head to the hardware store. The hardware store will offer a vast array of nails and screws that will be necessary during construction. You may also need a saw and some clamps if your side table is in a tight space.

Above all else, make sure to take accurate measurements when measuring out your pieces of wood. A good rule of thumb is to buy pieces that are one inch longer than your finished product because there will inevitably be some waste when cutting the shapes out.

Now that you have your supplies ready, it’s time to start building!

What to Know Before You Start?

Before you start this project, you’ll want to be sure that you have the right tools on hand. The tools we recommend are a drill, wood bit, and sandpaper.

You should also know that this project can be done in two ways: with a table saw or without a table saw. For this project, we’ll show you how to use a hand plane to bring your old side table to life.

How to refinish old side table legs?

First, you need to remove any hardware on the legs that’s not needed. You’ll want to take a drill and remove any screws that are not necessary.

Next, using a sander, sand the whole leg and all of the parts jutting out of it. Use 180 grit sandpaper for the roughing process, 220 grit sandpaper for the finishing process and 400 grit sandpaper for smoothing out minor imperfections.

After your sander has done its work, use a power sander with 80-grit flap and 80-grit belt to sand off all of your hand-sanding scratches. This will also give your table an even more polished look.

Once this is complete, you can spray on primer if you choose or paint it any color you desire! We recommend painting it white for a clean finish or painting it in an eclectic mix of colors for a fun look!

How to make a DIY side table?

Step 1: Choose a side table and get it ready

Choose a side table that you already have or shop for one on-line.

Step 2: Remove the old finish

Use sandpaper and remove the old finish from your side table. You can use a power sander for this step if you want to speed up the process. But, if you don’t have access to a power sander, use sandpaper on your own.

Step 3: Sand the entire piece with 220-grit sandpaper

After removing the old finish, sand the entire piece with 220-grit sandpaper. Then use 220-grit sandpaper on all of the edges and corners of your furniture piece. This makes sure that there are no rough edges left behind from removing the old finish.

Step 4: Apply polyurethane sealer to protect your wood

To protect your wood while you’re waiting for polyurethane to dry, apply polyurethane sealer to each area of your new side table. Once dried, spray polyurethane onto your finished project as an added layer of protection against water damage and wear and tear over time. Your DIY side table is now ready to be painted! To paint your DIY side table, turn it upside down and prep it by masking off any areas that will not be painted such as legs with painter's tape or cardboard before painting them blue with spray paint then finishing
